November 25, 2014 - We need to make sure we know how a spring scale works. Today we found that when we held the spring scale upside down, it weighed itself. This could cause a variable. On page 40 of Bob we wrote about this and how we could make sure it does not become an issue when we use the spring scale for experimentation. We then did an experiment with a rubber band and two masses. One was 240g the other was 1000g. The larger mass stretched the rubber band further than the smaller mass did. We explained how the spring inside the measuring tool was similar to the rubber band.

November 24, 2014 - We set up our notebooks for our experimentation on First Class Levers from charts on the hallway walls.

November 21, 2014 - Students conclude this experimentation. We discuss what they have discovered.

November 19, 2014 - Students continue experimentation. Students begin to developed a rule. The closer I get to the fulcrum...

November 18, 2014 - Students are given a notes booklet to draw pictures of their accomplishments. Documentation is important. Students keep experimenting with this lever system.

November 17, 2014 - The students have seen how a lever can be used to lift an object with very little effort. The now begin to experiment with levers at their desk. From a data chart students build a lever system with the fulcrum in the middle. The load is placed on one side, 15 cm from the fulcrum. They push at three points on the other side of the lever system. One point (A) is close to the fulcrum, while point C is the furthest from the fulcrum. The object was to see where it was the easiest and where it was the most difficult to lift the load.

November 14, 2014 -  Since the students could not lift me with the fulcrum dead center, students suggested that I move further from the fulcrum and they moved closer. This made it worse. As I got closer to the fulcrum and they got farther away, it appeared that this was going to be possible. At one point, I stood at the 1/2  foot mark. We put the fulcrum at the one foot mark and students pushed at the 6 foot mark. We put a bathroom scale under their pushing had to see the force theyn were applying. Students were able to lift up my 145 pounds of mass with an applyed force of 10 pounds. Wer were given sheets todat to glue into our Sally notebook for an upcoming project called the Ecosystem.

November 13, 2014 - We began to look at the Lever today. Student had to make a hypothesis of how to lift me off the floor using a lever. Our lever was a six foot long board with lines on it so it appeared like a giant ruler. We put the balancing point or Fulcrum in the middle and me on one sige of the roler or lever. Everyone got a chance to push down on the other sile of this lever system, but no one could lift me up. Tomorrow we will try out other ways of putting this lever system together.
