Insect Characteristics

Insects are part of a group of animals called Arthropods. All arthropods have an outside skeleton on their bodies called an exo-skeleton. They have no bones inside of them. Spiders are also arthropods but are in a of animals called arachnids.  The things that make insects different from arachnids is that insects have six legs not eight as in the case of spiders and all insects have three body parts (a head, abdomen and thorax)

Students examine insects printed on cards, rubber insects and real insects to find differences and similarities in their structures. From this, students will begin to make groups from the animals and be on their way to learning classification skills.
